In his defense, this also calls it a walk back.


I think it’s tipping the strategic ambiguity in the direction of US willingness to put American forces in harm’s way, but not so much that the ambiguity is gone - “yes” to military intervention can have very broad interpretations.

I agree with Trumpies who think it’s a good thing to keep China a little off balance about what they can expect militarily from us if they follow Putin’s folly. Although of course Trumpies only like that when Trump does it. Like just about anything else.

There was no ambiguity about SK’s and Japan’s more aggressive postures.
